Transforming Small Spaces: 5 Interior Design Tips for a Spacious Feel

Updated: Dec 6, 2023

Small spaces can be a design challenge, but they also offer a world of creative possibilities. As an interior designer, you have the power to transform cramped quarters into inviting, spacious sanctuaries. By utilising smart design techniques, you can make any room feel larger and more comfortable. In this blog, we will explore five proven strategies to enhance the perceived size of small spaces and create a more open and inviting atmosphere.

1- Harness the Magic of Mirrors:

Mirrors are one of the oldest tricks in the book when it comes to making a room appear larger. Placing large mirrors strategically can reflect natural light and create the illusion of additional space. Consider placing mirrors opposite windows, or small ones behind bedside lamps to reflect as much light back into the room as possible. Full length, leaning style mirrors work great in bedrooms or hallways. Remember, the larger the mirror, the more significant the impact on the room's perceived size.

2 - Paint:

The colour palette you choose plays a pivotal role in how spacious a room appears. Light colours such as soft whites, pale blues, and pastel tones are excellent choices for small spaces. They reflect more light and make the room feel open and airy. Colour drenching an entire room is an excellent way of removing the rooms boundaries; by making the wall & ceiling blend into each other. Narrow hall? Using a horizontal colour split half way will create an illusion of a wider space.

3 - Clever Furniture:

In a small room, choosing the right furniture is crucial. Opt for streamlined, multi-functional pieces. Consider furniture with built-in storage to reduce clutter. Pieces should be scaled correctly for your needs, such as opting for appropriate bed sizes, or compact floating shelves instead of bedside tables can stop spaces feeling cramped. Additionally, furniture with exposed legs can create a sense of openness by allowing more floor space to be visible. Whilst floating vanities and toilets work wonders in bathrooms. Arrange furniture in a way that maximises traffic flow and minimises visual obstruction. Don't underestimate the power of empty space and leave some breathing room in between pieces.

4 - Use Vertical Space:

Make the most of your vertical space by installing tall bookshelves, cabinets, or wall-mounted storage. Vertical lines draw the eye upward, creating the illusion of higher ceilings and more spacious surroundings. These storage solutions can help keep the floor clear and visually expand the room. Be sure to decorate these shelves with items that are functional and aesthetically pleasing to avoid a cluttered appearance.

5 - Strategic Lighting:

Proper lighting can do wonders for making a small room feel larger. Use a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a layered and well-lit space. Maximise natural light by keeping window treatments minimal or using sheer curtains. Consider pendant lights or wall sconces to save floor and surface space. Mirrors, as mentioned earlier, can also help bounce and amplify light throughout the room.

Designing for small spaces presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. By implementing these five design strategies, you can maximise the perceived space in your small rooms, making them feel larger, more comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing. Remember that the key to successful small space design is creativity, resourcefulness, and the skilful use of visual tricks to create a sense of openness and comfort. With these tips, you can transform compact spaces into stylish and functional havens.
